Ruffino one of the oldest and most representative wineries in Italy invited me to visit their new estate in the heart of Tuscany. I had two full days enjoying good wine and great hospitality in their newly opened relais “Poggio Casciano” in the Florentine countryside.

It was my first time in Tuscany visiting the Ruffino vineyards and estates in the countryside close to Florence. We had the chance to know more about the history but also to see all the important places of Ruffino. We stayed at the new estate Poggio Casciano, which is located right next to the vineyards and has the most beautiful view. The resort is housed in a Renaissance villa that has long been in the family and been restored and renovated with all the modern comforts and just newly opened its doors. I was lucky to be one the first guests at this beautiful place. With its rustic charm and the warm welcome you can relax and enjoy the Tuscan weather with good wine & food. A perfect combination!

In 1877 the cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino decided to develop their passion for winemaking by establishing a small winery near Florence. Ruffino has established itself as a leader in Chianti, renowed for consistency and quality of their wines. The result they obtain is a very high quality product: red, white and sparkling wines.

Chianti Ruffino, followed by Riserva Ducale, was one of the very first wines to cross the Italian border and introduce Italian wine to the world. Present in over 85 countries covering 5 continents, Ruffino is an international leader of great wines.

You can feel the Tuscan spirit while staying at Poggio Casciano. My room had a beautiful view and I was surrounded with nature right next to the vineyards. You can stroll through the yards or just enjoy the view from the terrace. The first thing we did was trying antipasti from the afternoon buffet with a glass of Ruffino wine. The new relais Poggio Casciano has seven rooms with a rustic & authentic interior in a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. It is only 12 km away from Florence.

Later that day we went to see the first estate in Montemasso: a breathtaking stone castle. A perfect place with another perfect view. We had the chance to cook our own dinner with all the fresh local ingredients and enjoyed a beautiful sunset next to the fireplace and tried different Ruffino wines. Montemasso also houses an historical stone cellar where old vintages of Ruffino's finest wines are aged. That evening I discovered Ruffino “Modus” for me — it’s a perfectly balanced red wine. I can’t even remember how many glasses I had: it was one of the best wines I had so far. The second day we went to see the vineyards in Chianti, strolled through the village and had a picnic at the Gretole estate:  a charming stone villa with 272 acres of Vineyards and famous for the Ruffino Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

The last evening we went to see Florence by car enjoy a beautiful sunset. What a romantic city it is!

Staying at Poggio Casciano, spending a day at the day in the magic Chianti area, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves of the Tuscan countryside — experiencing a visit to a winery in a way you will hardly find again, immersed in wine, history and art. Have the chance to visit Florence and come back to the resort. A perfect way to spend some quality time in Italy!
